History’s first comic book-style character

gm 104 color

Above: the GREEN MAN: legendary mythical character; official mascot and comic book star of Eco Comics; and the world’s first comic book character?

During the 1230s, French artist Villard de Honnecourt drew a number of parchment sketches of the Green Man. Despite their age, to this day these look remarkably like a modern comic book artist’s ‘concept sketches’ (used by comic book creators to define the visual appearance of a character). Indeed, even stylistically these drawings look incredibly fresh and modern.

Influenced by earlier carvings (by the 1230s the character was already firmly established), Villard de Honnecourt’s sketches give the Green Man legitimate claim to being the first comic book-style character in history.

Despite this, in almost 800 years since, we don’t believe that the Green Man has ever been given his own story, let alone comic book – until Eco Comics decided to do so, that is! It is even more remarkable considering that the Green Man influenced Treebeard in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Puck in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and MANY comic book characters.

Check out the original, real-deal in his own PAPERLESS-exclusive, ‘green’ series out now from Eco Comics!

The Green Apple Award 2013-2014 (Gold Winner) as presented to Eco Comics

Eco Comics was presented with its prestigious trophy during a special award ceremony at the House of Commons, Palace of Westminster in London.

The award – presented by the Green Organisation – recognises, rewards and promotes environmental best practice both in the UK and internationally.

Eco Comics said: “Last year we won bronze, which was fantastic, but this time we have been awarded the gold.

“It is rewarding to receive some recognition for our approach of green, paperless graphic literature.

“Some people initially seemed reluctant to change from print, or to face up to the negative impact of global deforestation caused by paper production. But once they saw the quality of both story and digital presentation, they came round.

“Our mantra is to produce the most entertaining stories possible, in identical format to mainstream print titles. That ours are paperless-exclusive and available on all manner of digital platforms is the icing on the cake.

“Paperless is the future of the medium, and Eco Comics is proud to be leading the way.”

To celebrate its Green Apple Awards, Eco Comics has released a free comic book starring such names as Dracula, Robin Hood, Tough Guy, and official mascot of the publisher, the Green Man.

Guy Fawkes explodes into graphic novels!

GFPAGE

PRESS RELEASE

5th November 2013

GUY FAWKES EXPLODES INTO GRAPHIC NOVELS

To celebrate Bonfire Night, Eco Comics has announced that Guy Fawkes is joining its roster of comic books and graphic novel stars.

Guy Fawkes has always been held as the public face of the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. His effigy is still burned every year across England on Bonfire Night, Fifth of November to commemorate the failure of the plot.

This legendary character, with almost unrivalled longevity, will make his comic book debut in the publisher’s upcoming series, Englishman. He will then go on to star in his own title.

Writer Chris Bunting explains: “The predictable approach for a writer in today’s climate would be to portray Guy Fawkes as a terrorist.

“He is as complicated as he is extreme. He’s not a dastardly villain twirling his moustache, but nor is he a hero in the traditional sense – even though he may consider himself to be.

“What Guy has in mind is a plot of epic proportions. Which for an expert in explosives can only spell big trouble.”

The character joins other famous faces at the award-winning ‘green’ publisher such as Robin Hood, Dick Turpin, Englishman, Dracula, Mr. T, Frankenstein, and official mascot, the Green Man.

Exclusive Guy Fawkes preview art is available on blog.mohawkmedia.co.uk and www.facebook.com/official.GuyFawkes

The launch date for the paperless comic book series, Englishman, featuring Guy Fawkes, is set to be announced soon.

ABOUT GUY FAWKES:
Guy Fawkes may have ended up as the national bogeyman, but he and his collaborators almost changed the course of English history. These religious extremists had stacked up thirty-six barrels of gunpowder in the cellar beneath where the king would have been sitting the next day for the opening of Parliament. Fawkes was to ignite the explosive, but was foiled with only hours to go. As a result, even today, the Yeomen of the Guard search the cellars of the Palace of Westminster before the State Opening of Parliament to ensure that there is no repeat of events. Bonfire Night is also commonly referred to as Guy Fawkes Night.

Dracula, Robin Hood, Jekyll & Hyde in Graphic Novel grudge match

PRESS RELEASE

DRACULA, ROBIN HOOD, JEKYLL & HYDE IN GRAPHIC NOVEL GRUDGE MATCH

Eco Comics has decided to celebrate Halloween by announcing its next graphic novel:

Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde.

Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde is written by Chris Bunting and illustrated by JL Czerniawski.

The graphic novel assembles the first series of the acclaimed comic book of the same name. It will also feature new material, including an exclusive cover by Czerniawski (shown above). As in all titles by the award-winning ‘green’ publisher, it is paperless-exclusive.

Bunting says: “You get three legends for the price of one: A Robin Hood who is anything but a cheesy gallant hero. A Dracula with a lot of skeletons in his closet, and a leviathan Hyde who could smash the Hulk.”

“This story best exemplifies the overall approach of Eco Comics. We are interested in bringing readers entertaining yarns, harking back to the era when comic book showdowns generated as much excitement as any publicity stunt.

“Supernatural, sci-fi, superheroics – and scraps – this story has it all.

“And, courtesy of the numerous horror genre stars, plenty of gore.”

The title also stars other famous faces such as Frankenstein, and a long overlooked character from the Robin Hood ballads.

Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde: the graphic novel will be available to order in various digital formats, including via the Eco Comics store: www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics for $2.95 (approximately £1.80). The launch date is set to be announced soon.

Green Knight ‘inspiration to J.R.R. Tolkien’ comes to graphic novels!

PRESS RELEASEGM#001-LET-013

GREEN KNIGHT ‘INSPIRATION TO J.R.R. TOLKIEN’ COMES TO GRAPHIC NOVELS

Eco Comics has announced that it is bringing the legendary Green Knight to its range of comic books and graphic novels.

The Green Knight first appeared in the famous 14th-century medieval Arthurian tale, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In it, he confronted King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

He is also notable as he appears to have been highly influential on J.R.R. Tolkien, who translated an edition of the fantasy story before going on to write The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

The character will make his comic book debut in the series featuring the publisher’s other legendary green character, the leafy-headed Green Man.

Writer Chris Bunting explains: “The Green Knight is pure comic book fare. He is a powerful giant green knight, and seems barking mad. He makes the ideal foil for the Green Man.

“Does any association remain with King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table? You will have to keep reading to find out.

“Expect a visually stunning Green Knight, yet one that is respectful to how he was originally intended. A character that clearly inspired J. R. R. Tolkien deserves nothing less.”

The character will join other famous faces at the award-winning ‘green’ publisher, including, among others: Dracula, Robin Hood, Green Man, Dick Turpin, Englishman, and Mr. T.

Eco Comics sees the Green Knight as a perfect fit to this roster, especially as many scholars consider Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as the world’s first eco-poem. He will go on to play a prominent role in the publisher’s plans.

Exclusive Green Knight preview art is available on the publisher’s blog blog.mohawkmedia.co.uk, and the character’s own dedicated Facebook page facebook.com/official.GreenKnight

The Green Man comic book, featuring the Green Knight, is available now from www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics

    • Review copies, images and interviews available: please email [editor AT mohawkmedia. co. uk]
    • ABOUT THE GREEN KNIGHT:The medieval poem tells how the Green Knight appeared in Camelot at King Arthur’s Round Table and challenged the knights. Arthur’s nephew, Sir Gawain, accepted the challenge in place of the king, and was later put to the test at the knight’s hideout, the Green Chapel.

      J. R. R. Tolkien handled the character in 1925, and even went on to write an original King Arthur tale not long after. A number of elements from the poem appear to have influenced the author’s own fantasy books.

    • ABOUT ECO COMICS:The award-winning comic book and graphic novel publishing arm of Mohawk Media is committed to producing the most environmentally-friendly and entertaining stories possible. All titles are paperless, not “webcomics” or print titles which are later turned digital. Eco Comics regularly attains international press coverage, and recently featured on national television (Channel 4).

    • ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND ARTIST:Chris Bunting is recognised for making literary and cultural giants accessible to a new generation, while simultaneously pleasing established fans. Such legendary names on his CV include Dracula, Action Man, Robin Hood, Mr. T, and Jekyll & Hyde. He is also responsible for many original titles and is currently writing his first novel.

Artist John-Paul Howard, a relative newcomer on the comic book scene, has quickly progressed to high-profile graphic novels and commercial illustration. However, it is the Green Man comic book that sees him illustrate his first legendary characters.

Eco Comics unveils ENGLISHMAN to celebrate St. George’s Day!

ECO COMICS UNVEILS NEW SUPER HERO, ENGLISHMAN

Eco Comics has decided to celebrate St. George’s Day by announcing its next comic book series, Englishman.

Englishman #1 is written by Chris Bunting and illustrated by Valentin Ramon.

It will be a paperless-exclusive title from the award-winning ‘green’ publisher.

Bunting says: “I often feel quite envious of the patriotism that so many other countries display, but ‘England’ has almost become a forgotten, even a dirty, word.

“To paraphrase the historian David Starkey, we should celebrate, and not be ashamed of, England.

“To help address this, just as the US has its Captain America, I realised that England needed its own patriotic super hero: enter Englishman.

“This is the most ambitious, dark and controversial title that I’ve yet written. But expect fun, fireworks, and my usual irreverence.

“Also expect plenty of famous English faces to appear in comic book form for the first time – the cover preview reveals some of them. Plus, there are brand new, quintessentially English characters, including Greenbelt and Dry Stone Wall.”

The publisher has made available the cover art to the first issue, including on its blog and the official Englishman Facebook page.

Further details on the Englishman project are due to be announced. The publisher states that the first issue will be in a new format previously unseen in comic books and free to download.

Notes:

  • ABOUT ENGLISHMAN:
Eco Comics believe Englishman to be the first English comic book hero to receive his own series. It seems that characters such as Captain Britain cannot be classed as patriotic: there is, of course, no such country as ‘Britain’.
  • ABOUT ECO COMICS:
The comic book and graphic novel publishing arm of Mohawk Media holds to a simple philosophy: to produce the most environmentally-friendly titles possible. Eco Comics places precedence on stories that entertain over those that attempt to be gritty and dark alone.
The publisher is committed to producing the highest quality stories: not “webcomics” or print titles which are later turned digital. Beginning to end product, each title is structured exactly like any top quality comic book, but without detrimental impact on environment and wildlife.
The publisher’s environmental endeavours have resulted in it receiving a 2012-2013 Green Apple Award.

Eco Comics wins award!

ECO COMICS WINS AWARD

Eco Comics has today announced that it is a winner of a Green Apple Award.

The award was presented to the comic book and graphic novel publisher during a carbon-neutral ceremony at the House of Commons, Palace of Westminster in London.

The publisher said: “Global deforestation by paper production continues to have a major negative impact on the eco-system. Therefore Eco Comics takes advantage of the emerging digital technologies to produce exclusively in the new frontier of the paperless format.

“The publishing industry, and readers, must realise that wildlife, such as tigers and gorillas, is likely to pay the ultimate price of deforestation: extinction. Even sustainable forestry is not a magic cure-all, shown by the criticism received from leading environmental organisations.

“Our titles are designed to the same physical format as leading print titles, but are kept paperless. The digital platforms also allow the reader an even greater interactive experience. There is no excuse for deforestation due to comic book production.”

In a continuing bid to raise awareness through various initiatives, the publisher recently brought the legendary Green Man to comic books, with the character also becoming its official mascot.

Eco Comics competed against more than 500 other nominations at the awards ceremony.

“That our achievements have already been recognised by the prestigious Green Apple Awards has given us added faith that we are trailblazing the future direction of this industry, and it will help show that paperless is best for both readers and the ecosystem.”

  • FURTHER INFORMATION:
A donation on the publisher’s behalf has been made to the Green Earth Appeal, whose plantings contribute to the Billion Tree Campaign initiative facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme.

Green Man news

Our new Green Man comic book is making headlines:

Legendary Green Man grown into super hero

PRESS RELEASE

LEGENDARY GREEN MAN GROWN INTO SUPER HERO BY ECO COMICS

Publisher Eco Comics has today announced the launch of a comic book series featuring one of the most iconic and prolific characters from myth and legend, the Green Man.

For over a millennium carvings of the Green Man have spread throughout churches, abbeys and cathedrals across the UK and Europe, and can also be found in the USA and Canada.

The publisher says: “Green Man has come to represent the environmental movement and our endangered eco-system, and so has more relevance now than ever. It is therefore fitting that his comic book debut will be entirely paperless and published by Eco Comics”.

Eco Comics has released the first issue exclusively on a variety of digital formats in order to have minimal negative impact on the environment and wildlife.

Green Man #1 is by the British team of writer Chris Bunting and artist John-Paul Howard.

Bunting says: “I’ve written a number of cultural heavyweights but the Green Man is extra special. The mystery surrounding him makes him very intriguing, while an artist’s sketches dating from the 1230s could make him the first comic book-style character in history.

“Yet in almost 800 years since, I don’t believe that he has ever been given his own story, let alone comic book – until now.

“It is even more remarkable considering that the Green Man influenced Treebeard in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Puck in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and so many comic book characters.”

Shrouded in mystery, this ancient leafy-headed mythical being is often considered to be of pre-Christian or ‘pagan’ origin. However the publisher states that the in-depth historical investigation that accompanies the story reveals startling conclusions.

Bunting adds: “I won’t give much away about the story itself with its amazing art, but the Green Man’s return is prompted by a threat to the last woodland in England. And when another legendary character turns up, all hell breaks loose.”

Green Man #1 is an exclusive ‘green’ paperless, digital 69-page issue. This includes historical article, Green Man: Unearthing the Facts. It is available to order now in various digital formats via the Eco Comics store: www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics for $1.95 (approximately £1.20).

A free preview edition of Green Man #1 is also available.

-Green Man is also set to become official mascot of Eco Comics as it undertakes various initiatives to help promote the need to protect the environment and wildlife.

-About the Green Man:
Often carved from wood or stone the Green Man is a face seen to be spewing, sprouting, surrounded by, or composed from, shrubbery. He can be found throughout Great Britain and Europe, especially in old churches, abbeys and cathedrals. He dates back for a millennium, but more likely two or more. He has evolved many diverse incarnations, including human, beast, feline, and perhaps his most iconic variety, the “leaf head”.
Today he is regarded as an ecological emblem. This constant reinvention has seen Green Man carvings continually produced, making him perhaps the longest reigning character of myth and pop culture. Yet much of what is thought to be known about him is often assumption and guesswork. We invite you to read Green Man: Unearthing the Facts (included in Green Man #1) for one of the most comprehensive and exhaustive historical investigations ever written.

-Green Man: the first comic book character?
During the 1230s, French artist Villard de Honnecourt drew a number of parchment sketches of the Green Man. Despite their age, these look remarkably like a modern comic book artist’s ‘concept sketches’ (used by comic book creators to define the visual appearance of a character). Indeed, even stylistically these drawings look incredibly fresh and modern.
Influenced by earlier carvings (by the 1230s the character was already firmly established), the sketches give the Green Man legitimate claim to being the first comic book-style character in history.

-About Eco Comics:
Mohawk Media’s publishing arm, Eco Comics, produces paperless comic books and graphic novels specifically designed to have minimal carbon footprint. Aware of the negative environmental impact of paper production, even sustainable forestry, it is probably the first publisher to take this stance. It also argues that digital comic books offer a bright future for the genre by providing a more ‘immersive’ reading experience.
Titles from the ‘home of green graphic fiction’ range from Dick Turpin to the recent Tough Guy graphic novel (featuring art by Wolverine co-creator Herb Trimpe), as well as upcoming graphic novel Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde.

Frankenstein enters Eco Comics!

FRANKENSTEIN ENTERS FRAY IN DRACULA VS. ROBIN HOOD VS. JEKYLL & HYDE

Publisher Mohawk Media has announced that classic literature and horror monster, Frankenstein, is to star in its comic book series, Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde.

The series has already seen surprise guest stars, including the comeback of Robin Hood’s original love interest, Clorinda, and the historical archetype of all vampires, Dracula the Impaler.

British writer Chris Bunting says: “Frankenstein’s Monster will play a pivotal role, not just in this series, but in a subplot bubbling away that will encompass many other titles from Eco Comics.”

Frankenstein will first appear in Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde #3.

Bunting adds: “You will see Frankenstein in a way never portrayed. And this monster is not this issue’s only legendary guest star, as a colossal character from the Robin Hood myth is also introduced.”

Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde is produced via the publisher’s range of Eco Comics, entirely paperless titles, designed to have minimal negative impact on the environment and wildlife.

Editor Stuart Buckley explains: “Digital is the future of comic books, without a doubt. The strong reviews that this series is receiving shows that it is more than giving print comics a run for their money.

“Ironically, without paper production we can reduce cover prices, giving readers extra value with the added satisfaction of knowing that the environment hasn’t suffered as a result.

“This series embodies our aim is to bring back fighting and fun to comic books.”

Each issue of Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde is twenty-pages, and available to download in various digital formats via the Eco Comics store: www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics at a cover price of $1.95 (approximately £1.25).

Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde will initially be a three-issue monthly series available exclusively via Eco Comics. Further instalments of the series, and other “versus” titles, are to be announced.

Artist interview

Artist of Supplanter, Matthew Weldon, is interviewed by JAZMA ONLINE here.

Matthew is an outstanding talent and is one to watch.

Supplanter is unique on many levels. It deals with dark subject matter, but unlike so many comics that do, this one retains a balance with humanity and warmth. It also features what may be the first ever war criminal hunter in comic books.

You can order the ‘pilot episode’ (issue #1) of Supplanter at the Eco Comics store.

Mr. T goes from gold to green!

MR. T GOES FROM GOLD TO GREEN

Publisher Mohawk Media has launched its Mr. T series through its range of environmentally-friendly, paperless Eco Comics.

Mr. T joins other famous names at Eco Comics including Dracula, Robin Hood, Dick Turpin, and Tough Guy.

The Hollywood hard man, renowned for his image of Mohawk haircut, gold chains and catchphrases, previously appeared in print in the publisher’s graphic novels.

Editor Stuart Buckley says: “It was always our intention to release the Mr. T graphic novel as a comic book series. Each chapter was intentionally structured to be the same length as a comic book.

“However, we’ve had to adjust to market demands. The graphic novel has sold out. The digital titles of Eco Comics have no print run, and so will never sell out, meaning every T fan can order a copy. The added satisfaction is that the environment hasn’t suffered as a result of paper production.

“The clean cut art of JL Czerniawski makes this series a joy to behold in any format.”

“This is great, and I am truly humbled,” is how Mr. T describes becoming the star of a comic book in the foreword. And in the world exclusive interviews throughout the series, he goes further, including stating why he is an even tougher comic book hero than Wolverine.

Series writer Chris Bunting adds: “I’ve gone to great lengths to do things never attempted, such as making T as close to a super hero as possible while retaining his classic persona. After over twenty-five years of fame, this action icon finally gets a rogues’ gallery, and even a new catchphrase. Old and new T fans can expect plenty of other surprises too.

“Plus the amazing formats offered by Eco Comics really help bring this classic character into the digital age.”

The first five issues of Mr. T are available to order now in various digital formats via the Eco Comics store: www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics The US dollar cover price is 0.99 for the first issue, and 1.95 for subsequent issues.

Trimpe does some Tough talking

Jazma Online talks to art legend Herb Trimpe – including about his work on Mohawk Media’s new graphic novel, TOUGH GUY!

Herb is known for his work on the Hulk, arguably defining the public image of the character more than any artist. It was during this run that Wolverine made his first ever appearance. Herb’s time at Marvel saw him illustrate the writings of Stan Lee, and with writer Chris Claremont, Trimpe created Captain Britain.

Publisher Mohawk Media has today released the second issue of its new title, Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde.

British writer Chris Bunting says: “The second issue features not one, but two tyrants from the pages of history. Each will play a major role in the future of this series.

DEFINING HULK AND WOLVERINE ARTIST UNLEASHES TOUGH GUY

BRITISH PUBLISHER TEAMS UP WITH AMERICAN ART LEGEND, HERB TRIMPE

Publisher Mohawk Media has today released a graphic novel featuring all-new action hero, Tough Guy.

The British team of writer Chris Bunting and artist Steve Beckett is joined by American art legend Herb Trimpe.

Writer Chris Bunting says: “The comic book world was in dire need of a true all-ages character. Enter Tough Guy. While he has to contend with a modern threat in the form of a terrorist organisation, he still has one foot in the past, when comic books were more concerned with entertaining than being edgy.

“There isn’t an artist more qualified to illustrate the cover than Herb Trimpe, whose art has graced some of the most entertaining comic books. Like the eponymous character, Herb Trimpe’s art pulls no punches.”

Herb Trimpe brought Wolverine into the comic book world, while his work on the Hulk has helped define the lasting public perception of the character. Having drawn a veritable who’s who of famous characters, Trimpe is no stranger to the UK, having helped create Captain Britain.

Herb Trimpe says: “I’m hoping Tough Guy leaves an impression on the fans even more so than Captain Britain – a character I judged to be not long lasting. So much for my judgement. I have had many requests for Captain Britain commissions, and I happily await my first request for a drawing of Tough Guy – a sure sign that he is on his way to occupy a place in the Comic Book Hall of Fame.”

The Tough Guy 42-page graphic novel is available exclusively via the publisher’s groundbreaking line of paperless Eco Comics. It is available in various digital formats via www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics for $2.99 (approx £1.90).
The graphic novel is also available to download as three individual comic book issues, each with a cover by regular series artist, Steve Beckett. Each issue has a cover price of $1.95.

  • ABOUT THE ARTISTS & WRITER:

Herb Trimpe has drawn major names including Spider-Man, Captain America, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and Thor. He has also drawn Indiana Jones, Transformers, Godzilla, Star Wars, and a cover for Rolling Stone magazine.
His time at Marvel saw him illustrate the writings of Stan Lee, and with writer Chris Claremont, Trimpe created Captain Britain.
He is perhaps best known for his seven-year run on the Incredible Hulk. It was during this that Wolverine (of the X-Men) made his first ever appearance.
Trimpe’s unique style has arguably helped define the public image of the Hulk more than any other artist. This was, in part, due to his illustrations of the character adorning much of the merchandise released throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Trimpe’s contribution to, and advancement of, the comic book, like the wealth of characters that he helped create, is far too vast to be summarised here.

During his brief time in the comic book industry, writer Chris Bunting has already become widely known for licensed properties, original properties, and literary adaptations. Recently launched titles include Dick Turpin and Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde.

Following Tough Guy, artist Steve Beckett has gone on to create and produce a number of new regular strips for iconic British comic, The Dandy, while also working on some of its classic characters. He additionally provides stories for the Beano Annual and Dandy Annual.

Dick Turpin also on Facebook! With exclusive art!

PRESS RELEASE

Tuesday 22 November 2011

DICK TURPIN, THE LEGENDARY LAWBREAKER, COMES TO COMICS!

Publisher Mohawk Media has today announced the release of a preview issue of its upcoming project, starring history’s most notorious masked highwayman, Dick Turpin.

This issue is available exclusively via the publisher’s groundbreaking line of paperless Eco Comics.

Writer Chris Bunting says: “It’s every writer’s dream to write such a famous, or should I say, infamous character as Dick Turpin. His multi-layered, unpredictable nature makes for great drama. Expect some startling revelations about the life of this legendary lawbreaker.

“Turpin lived at a time when England was more like the Wild West, and criminals faced the death penalty at the gallows. Highwaymen led a very exciting life but often a very short one.

“This 18th Century swashbuckling firebrand was born to be a 21st Century complex comic book character. Dick Turpin’s return is a case of perfect timing.”

The digital and paperless Dick Turpin: Pencil-Only Preview features pencil-art from the first instalment of the upcoming title.

Editor Stuart Buckley explains: “This format allows the reader the opportunity to see Dick Turpin ride again in the untouched, gorgeous art of Salvador Velázquez.

“The creative team gives us a taste of what is to come: forget stuffy historical fiction, this is a comic book cocktail of action-adventure and mystery-thriller featuring one of Britain’s, if not the world’s, most recognisable rogues.

“With his mask and famous steed, Turpin has been the archetype for many highwaymen and outlaws: even the Lone Ranger bears remarkable parallels.”

Dick Turpin: Pencil-Only Preview is a 16-page issue featuring lettered pencil art only, and is available now in various digital formats via the Eco Comics store: www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics for $1.95 (approximately £1.20).

Further details on the Dick Turpin project are due to be announced.

DRACULA, ROBIN HOOD AND JEKYLL & HYDE SET TO DO BATTLE

CLASSIC CHARACTERS CLASH IN COMIC BOOK

Publisher Mohawk Media has today released the first issue of its digital comic book series, Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde.

Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde is written by Chris Bunting and illustrated by JL Czerniawski, who previously collaborated on the publisher’s Mr. T graphic novels.

Bunting says: “I’ve already written a few famous faces, but this is something extra special: bringing a number of world-famous characters together for the ultimate showdown.

“My other goal was to redress the mistreatment these characters have so often received. Robin Hood isn’t portrayed here as the gallant hero he obviously never was, and Dracula is closer in tone to the original than perhaps ever before.

“As for Jekyll and Hyde, he was the main inspiration for the Hulk. Because of this, it never felt right that Hulk was always portrayed as bigger and stronger… until now.

“But this isn’t just a horror tale, despite the Halloween launch of issue #1. It’s full of supernatural, sci-fi, superheroics – and good old-fashioned scraps.

“It’s a clash of genres as much as it is a clash of the characters who embody and represent those genres.”

Editor Stuart Buckley adds: “It feels right for a British writer to bring these British-born legends together through a British publisher. The characters’ quintessential ‘Britishness’ won’t be lost in translation as it so often has been in the past.

“As a result, we expect this series to have major global appeal. The first issue is ready to download worldwide now.

“Like many readers, we miss the days when a clash between the likes of Thing and Hulk generated far more interest than publicity stunts which seem to get in the way of solid storytelling, like ‘killing off’ the hero. We hope to bring that kind of excitement back.”

Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde will initially be a three issue series available monthly exclusively via the publisher’s groundbreaking line of ECO COMICS, with further instalments of the series to be announced.

It is expected to usher in a “versus” range of titles from the publisher.

Dracula vs. Robin Hood vs. Jekyll & Hyde #1 is a twenty-page issue, and is available to order now in various digital formats via the Eco Comics store: www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics for $1.95 (approximately £1.20).

Eco Comics plants an environmentally-friendly comic book evolution

Publisher Mohawk Media has today announced that its Eco Comics range – paperless comic books and graphic novels designed with the specific purpose of having a minimal carbon footprint – is now available via digital comic book platform Graphicly, creating what it anticipates will be an evolutionary explosion for the comic book.

Graphicly will carry Eco Comics titles Heroic High, Supplanter, Pirate Queen, and more, via www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics
Graphicly’s digital comic platform includes applications to allow the purchasing and reading of digital comic books for PC and Mac desktops, and mobile phone and tablet platforms on Android, iPhone and iPad.

Eco Comics titles are available worldwide to download or view online.

Editor Stuart Buckley says: “Paper production, even via sustainable forestry, can have a disastrous effect on the environment and wildlife. Combining Eco Comics’ outlook with the digital direction of the Graphicly platform is more than a turning point in comic books and graphic novels, it’s an evolutionary explosion.”

“As you flow through the story, the panels jump out. It takes comics to a whole new level. Readers get that extra satisfaction by realising that comics can be environmentally-friendly and, as a direct result, perhaps being even more enjoyable, interactive, and accessible.”

“Readers can also discuss and review each issue, resulting in Eco Comics not only being environmentally-friendly, but fan-friendly.”

“Mohawk Media and Eco Comics will continue to use the latest technologies to help minimise the impact of print comic production on the environment, while simultaneously striving to bring the highest quality entertainment to the reader.”

Eco Comics titles are available now on Graphicly, including a free preview comic. More titles are set to be announced.
